Welcome to Trout's
Choice!
Hi. I'm Mike
Kulhawick, founder of Trout's Choice.
I
have been fly fishing and fly tying for 40 years. I started Trout's
Choice in Anchorage, Alaska tying mostly for my own use and friends. One
day I walked into a store and they ordered 144 dozen salmon flies.
However, I’m getting ahead of myself.
I will tell you this however, my
desire, no my passion, is to teach handicapped Vietnam Veterans how to
tie a good fly, then go fish it.
I learned how to tie flies in Maine,
while still in the military I was transferred to Alaska where I started
to guide in Bristol Bay before moving back to Michigan where I started a
fly shop in 1986 in Port Huron. I tied flies at all of the major fly
fishing venues in the Detroit area. After getting settled and a great
part time gig Uncle Sam decided that I shouldn’t have so much fun and
called me to Colorado or forfeit my Civil Service career. After
retirement, I moved to my old home waters in
Grayling, Michigan. I purchased the old Stephan homestead that John Howe
started building Au Sable River Boats in. It was my dream and desire to
create a fly shop. I have worked hard on this and am now open for
business.
I’ve got to tell you I LOVED the Rockies of
Colorado, but I moved back here because I believe that one night in
Denver tying flies God spoke to me and gave me a vision and a purpose.
I believe it is
my calling to teach handicapped Vietnam veterans how to fish using flies
they have tied. In fact,I have a vision of introducing these flies to
local flyshops tied by veterans.
I have a portable fly tying bench that I take
to various locations like Jim Wheres at Mackinaw City Outfitters, FFF
conclaves and was invited to the International Fly Tying Symposium at
Somerset, New Jersey this year. I am also available to come to schools
and other venues and teach fly tying to old and young anglers
alike.
"If you don't know your flies, know your
fly-tyer" has been my motto for many years. If
you can't find the fly you are looking for, just send me a description
and I will do my best to tie it for you.
